Someone
at Microsoft answered our prayers. Soon after the
introduction of Windows 95, Microsoft got tired of
responding to customer complaints, so they released TweakUI
in their collection of "Power Toys." TweakUI is a
little settings window that allows you to fix a few
annoyances without messing around in the registry.
Important:
Microsoft has a history of removing TweakUI from their
website without notice. Rest assured that this tool will always
be available at PC Bits n Bytes.
Important:
please read the instructions below for your operating system
for the installation procedure and any applicable notes and
warnings. Also, these are for English language
systems only. Please contact Microsoft directly for other
language releases.
Choose
the appropriate version for your operating system:
|
Windows
XP
1.
If you have an older version of TweakUI installed,
use Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel
to uninstall it now. This includes the version of
TweakUI previously available here as part of the
single "Powertoys for Windows XP"
package.
2.
Download
TweakUI for Windows XP (also available
directly from Microsoft as part of their Power
Toys collection).
3.
Double-click TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe, and
follow the instructions on-screen.
4.
To start TweakUI, use the TweakUI shortcut in your
Start Menu (it's no longer found in Control
Panel), or run \windows\system32\tweakui.exe.
Note:
this version will only work on Windows XP. For
other versions of Windows, see below.

|
Windows
Me, Windows 2000, Windows 98, and Windows 95
1.
Download
TweakUI (version 1.33).
2.
Unzip tweakui.zip using an unzip utility, such as WinZip,
and unzip the file in a convenient location, such as
your desktop. It should place a folder named "TweakUI"
on your desktop with all the files inside (5 files
in total).
3.
Right-click on the tweakui.inf file and
select Install to install it on your system.
4.
To start TweakUI, double-click the TweakUI icon in
Control Panel.
Note:
there's a bug in this installer (it's been there
since the very first release, except for the new
version for Windows XP). If it prompts you to insert
a disk or specify the location of the TweakUI files,
just point to the folder containing the files you
just unzipped, and click Ok.

Additional
notes:
-
When
first released, TweakUI was part of the Windows
95 "Power Toys" package. TweakUI 1.2 is
included on the Windows 98 CD, in the \tools\reskit\powertoy\
folder, although the version available here is more
recent. It is not, however, included on the Windows 98 Second
Edition CD, nor on the CDs of any newer versions of
Windows.
-
If
you have trouble installing TweakUI, please remember
that the downloads available here are for the English
language version of Windows only. If you're using a
language other than English, you'll have to obtain a
version of TweakUI for your edition directly from
Microsoft.
-
TweakUI
is a Microsoft product. PC Bits n Bytes does not offer any
support or warranty for TweakUI. If you're having
trouble with TweakUI, try our forums (links are to your
left) or contact Microsoft.
