What is it?
VNC stands for Virtual Network
Computing. It is remote control software which allows you to
view and interact with one computer (the "server") using a
simple program (the "viewer") on another computer anywhere on
the Internet. The two computers don't even have to be the same
Operating System, so for example you can use VNC to view
Windows 98 on your Windows XP machine. VNC is publicly
available and is in widespread active use by millions
throughout industry, academia and privately.
How can I use VNC?
Remote control software such as
VNC allows a person at a remote computer to assume control of
another computer across a network using the TCP/IP protocols
of the internet, as if they were sitting in front of the other
computer.
In other words, PC Bits n Bytes
could use VNC to take control of your PC to install and
use some new software package, or to diagnose and fix
problems, or to access and administer your machine without
making a trip to your home or business. Even to allow a PC
Bits n Bytes employee to take control of the customer's
computer to provide assistance, or show a tutorial.
How is VNC different from PC
Anywhere?
It is small and simple. The
Windows viewer, for example, is about 150K in size and can be
run directly from a floppy.
The entire Java viewer is substantially less than 100K and
takes less time to download than the images on some web pages.
There is a Java viewer so that any desktop can be viewed with
any Java-capable browser. There is a Windows server, allowing
you to view the desktop of a remote Windows machine on any of
these platforms using exactly the same viewer. The simplicity
of the protocol makes it easy to port to new platforms and
other people have therefore ported VNC to a huge variety of
platforms.
With VNC, it is TCP/IP dependent.
Without a stable connection through the internet, VNC is
unable to access a computer. There are no dialup features like
PC Anywhere. In other words, if you have no connection to the
internet, there is no possible way to use VNC for any remote
assistance. The only downside to this great small software
package.
